Finding direction after a profound loss
“Connor has been my compass since before he was born, when I knew something was wrong with my pregnancy. An MRI diagnosed him with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and after his birth, led to a childhood filled with doctor’s visits and operating rooms. Much of my life was dedicated to Connor, and so many of my life decisions were guided by Connor, first by his needs, then inspired by his aspirations. Connor was my ‘Why’, from becoming a physical therapist, to building a life with his future in mind.
“As a teenager, Connor learned to pursue his passions with his entire heart, whether drumming, playing chess in tournaments or against as many opponents as he could manage, or pushing his body beyond its many limits, and he was dedicated to growth personally and spiritually, and helping others with their growth. He was told he had no rhythm, and yet he became an amazing drummer. He was told he needed to get a job, or go to college, yet neither of those paths suited him, determined to find his own path.
“Finally, he discovered his true passion as a life coach and was working to inspire others to make themselves great. His physical heart was small, but his spiritual heart was the biggest in any room full of people. When Connor passed away suddenly after a bike accident it was like someone took away my entire life, my happiness, my direction, my purpose…my compass. The only words to describe the feeling are ‘profound sadness and despair’. Some days it takes so much effort just to do the things required to go on living. Leaving home and traveling has had a positive influence on the healing process personally, and has been one of the best ways I have found to reduce the effects of grief in my life.”
The Healing Journey
Grief travel helps people process loss, find healing, and rediscover purpose after the death of a loved one. Grief travel allows people to step away from the routines and spaces that amplify the feelings of loss, offering opportunities for reflection, connection and personal growth in a new environment.
Purposeful Destinations
Choosing a location tied to their loved one’s memory, or a destination to which they always wanted to travel.
Healing Activities
Memorial ceremonies, scattering ashes or dedicating a meaningful gesture to the departed loved one, or a personal growth experience to regain a sense of life and purpose.
Supportive Community
Group retreats or travel experiences allow individuals to share stories and connect with others who have faced similar losses. Travel with close friends or family can provide a comforting balance between solitude and companionship.
Rediscovering Joy
Grief travel is not just about processing sorrow but also about finding moments of peace, gratitude, and sometimes even joy. Exploring new cultures, cuisines, and experiences can help reframe the narrative of life after loss.
